Ed Malyon's Sure Thing: DR Congo to beat Mali and progress in AFCON

The Africa Cup of Nations group stages are now coming to a close. The final round of fixtures in Group B takes place today, with all four sides still able to go through to the next round - mathematically at least.

Top plays bottom when Ghana and Niger meet, with the Black Stars needing just a draw to guarantee qualification but expected to win easily. Our focus, however, lies on the fixture between The Democratic Republic of Congo and Mali in Durban.

Mali currently sit second in the group after a narrow loss to Ghana and a win against Niger on Thursday. With Momo Sissoko, Seydou Keita and Samba Diakité in their midfield, Mali should be able to dominate games with ease but they have been uninspiring in both matches so far.

DR Congo, meanwhile, have drawn both of their games and come into this one needing a win to progress. Needless to say, if they can put in the sort of performance they did in holding Ghana then they should be able to beat Mali, especially with their front three of Mputu, Mbokani and Lua Lua.

For such an even-looking game, it seems great value that DR Congo are 4.00 to win outright. That is obviously the only result that will see them through as well, so expect them to be going all-out for the victory, especially late on.

It is with this in mind that we decide to back the DRC – albeit Draw No Bet – to have the firepower to see off Mali and qualify for the quarter-finals. The price is 3.00.
