Borussia Mönchengladbach 2.50 - Bayer Leverkusen 2.70

The Foals have had a disappointing start to 2014 with two defeats.

There aren’t any obvious reasons, but somehow Lucien Favre’s mean have lost their rhythm. Missing Julian Korb at right-back makes them marginally weaker, too.

Leverkusen, with their strong 4-3-3 formation,  a line-up that doesn’t miss any key players, and a very strong bench, will try to disrupt the home side even further and hit them hard on the break. It should a be high-quality but low-scoring affair. I’d opt for under 2.5 at 2.04

VfL Wolfsburg 1.72 - Mainz 05 4.65

Everybody – me included – tipped Wolfsburg to make a strong push for the Champions League places after the winter break. Two defeats (v Hannover and Schalke) have brought them back down to earth. “We know where we stand,” said VfL coach Dieter Hecking grumpily.

Mainz are in great form with three wins on the trot. The away team are without captain Nikolce Noveski in defence but the return of attacking midfielder Nicolai Müller gives them more options up front.

I’d usually tip Mainz here due to their superior tactical setup, I but feel that Wolfsburg will come good. The home side are 1.72.

Werder Bremen 7.85 - Borussia Dortmund 1.38

Bremen manager Robin Dutt told reporters the team trained really well this week. After the 3-1 disaster at Augsburg, we can expect a reaction from the northerners who will hand experienced midfielder Ludovic Obraniak his debut. Left-back Santiago Garcia is suspended though.

Dortmund suffered another injury setback when Mats Hummels limped off after a midweek friendly with an ankle injury. Sven Bender will have to moonlight as a defender once more.

Both sides are anything but solid at the back, so I’d take both to score at 1.70.

SC Freiburg 2.65 - 1899 Hoffenheim 2.55

Striker Sven Schipplock is doubtful (achilles heel), so  Brazilian Roberto Firmino might play as a false nine for the away team. TSG come into the match fresh from a 3-0 win over Hamburger SV.

Freiburg looked sharp in their opener v Leverkusen but were overwhelmed by Mainz last week. Freiburg’s hard-pressing will make it difficult for Hoffenheim but both sides concede so many goals that the over 3.5  at 2.65 looks like a very nice price

FC Nürnberg 13.50 - FC Bayern Munich 1.22

“My players have told me that it’s always difficult in Nürnberg,” said Pep Guardiola.

It’s true that Bayern tend to find it tough in the derby against the Franconians – three out of the last four games ended in 1-1 draws – but I wonder if the new, attacking setup under Gertjan Verbeek will actually make it easier for Bayern on Saturday.

In the light of the sharper performance v Frankfurt and a jostling for starting places, we can expect another strong showing from the league leaders even without the injured Franck Ribery. Over 3.5 goals is 2.10.

Eintracht Frankfurt 1.62 - Eintracht Braunschweig 5.50

Armin Veh is under a bit of extra pressure after resting Sebastian Rode and Carlos Zambrano in the 5-0 defeat v Bayern last Sunday, and keeper Kevin Trapp should also return.

Braunschweig will be very hard to break down, especially in the first half, but they don’t offer much going forward – a measly 11 goals is the worst tally in the league.

I like the draw at half-time at 2.25, as there’s good chance that any goals will only come late on.

Hamburger SV 2.70 - Hertha BSC 2.50

HSV are in dire straits after two 3-0 defeats and a slump to 17th spot. Rafael van der Vaart admitted that there was “fear” inside the squad but also claimed that the experience brought everyone closer together. We will see.

Hertha will certainly provide a stern test. Jos Luhukay’s team didn’t necessarily deserve to lose in Frankfurt and at home to Nürnberg. By sitting deep and frustrating a HSV team who are desperate to make amends, they can get at a least a point.

Hertha on the double chance are 1.45.

VfB Stuttgart 2.30 - FC Augsburg 3.00

The home side lost 2-1 in all three league of their games so far in 2014, and manager Thomas Schneider is reportedly toying with the idea of ditching his 4-4-2 system for the more fashionable 4-2-3-1 for the Swabian derby against incredibly solid Augsburg.

Form favours Markus Weinzierl’s side but VfB have been a little bit unlucky and played better than the results would suggest. Home advantage will see them through at 2.30.

FC Schalke 04 1.58 - Hannover 96 5.80

Under new coach Tayfun Korkut, Hannover are playing their best football of the season, and two wins are apt award for their much improved performances. They will be unchanged going into Sunday night’s game at Schalke.

The Royal Blues were also pretty convincing in their two wins (over HSV and Wolfsburg). It’ll be a tighter game than the market suggests. I wouldn’t really like to oppose either side at this point.

Take over 2.5 goals at 1.48 to be on the safe side
