European Football Results: Bayern strengthen title grip without playing

Atletico Madrid had the chance to go top of La Liga this weekend but failed to win by a big enough margin to leapfrog Barcelona.

Diego Simeone’s side beat Levante 3-2 at home to go top on Saturday night, only for Barcelona to reclaim pole position, as they came back from 2-0 down to spank Getafe 5-2. Real Madrid also won on the road, beating Valencia 3-2.

Barcelona are 1.57 to win the title, with Real Madrid at 3.75 and Atletico Madrid at 6.00.

Inter Milan won their derby with AC Milan 1-0 but with both teams well off the pace, there were more significant results elsewhere.

Napoli are now ten points behind Juventus after drawing 1-1 with Cagliari. Juve thrashed Atalanta 4-1, while Roma kept hold of their coattails with a 4-0 win against rock bottom Catania.

Juventus are 1.22 to retain their title, with Roma at 5.50 and Napoli at 15.00.

Bayern Munich were not in action in the Bundesliga this weekend due to their commitments in the Club World Cup and yet they still tightened their grip on the title.

Second-placed Bayer Leverkusen lost 1-0 away at Werder Bremen, while Borussia Dortmund were beaten 2-1 at home by Hertha Berlin, despite having taken the lead. Bayern Munich are now seven points clear of Leverkusen with a game in hand.

Unibet are no longer taking bets on Bayern to win the league, with Bayer Leverkusen now out to 40.00 and Dortmund at 50.00.

A fascinating weekend in France saw none of the top sides winning, leaving all to play for in the second half of the season.

Monaco lost 2-1 at home to Valenciennes on Friday night creating a huge opportunity for the winners of Paris St-Germain’s match with Lille. Ultimately the two sides could only draw 2-2, leaving just four points separating third-placed Lille from league leaders PSG.

Paris St-Germain are 1.10 to retain their title, with Monaco at 8.50 and Lille at 22.00.
