Liverpool's Top 5 Champions League Moments

Liverpool are back in the big time with Champions League football returning to Anfield after a five-year hiatus. The Reds may have won four European Cups, but it took them a while to make their mark on the Champions League. But since Gerard Houllier marched them back into Europe’s elite club competition in 2002, there have been quite a few special moments. Here are our top five...

1. Gerrard goal vs Olympiakos (2005)

It’s still difficult to decide what was better: the goal or the commentary. Either way, this was the most magical moment during Liverpool’s memorable 2005 journey to Istanbul.

2. Beating Barca at the Nou Camp (2007)

This was a classic Barca team, with Ronaldinho, Deco and a young Messi all among the stars of the Nou Camp that won the competition the previous season. But that didn’t stop Liverpool taking away a famous 2-1 win.

3. Torres destroys Real Madrid (2009)

For anyone under 10 years old: there was a time when Torres was good. Very good. So good, in fact, that he almost single handedly tore Real Madrid apart with a scintillating solo performance.

4. Luis Garcia goal vs Chelsea (2005)

Was it a goal? No, of course not – and it still grates with Jose Mourinho to this day. But Luis Garcia’s strike against Chelsea has still gone down in Anfield folklore.

5. That night in Istanbul (2005)

There of course can be no greater Champions League moment for Liverpool than this sweet, sweet night in Istanbul. From Gerrard’s header onwards it was, quite simply, football’s greatest ever comeback. Miraculous!
