European Football Results: Allegri Out After Seventh Milan Defeat

With the Bundesliga still on a winter break, here's our round-up of the Spanish, Italian and French weekend action...

AC Milan’s 4-3 defeat at Sassuolo on Sunday has proved the end of the road for Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri, whose tenure at San Siro has been brought to an end. Goals from Robinho, Balotelli and Montolivo couldn’t prevent an embarrassing loss to the Serie A strugglers.

Allegri’s sacking has opened the door to club legend Clarence Seedorf, who could take over as caretaker ahead of a tough home bout against high-flying Verona.

Elsewhere in Serie A, Roma remain second after a 4-0 trouncing of Genoa, but Juve stay eight points clear at the top after their 4-1 hammering of Cagliari, a game which Manchester United manager David Moyes flew out to watch. And that was one our Serie A tipping expert Paolo Bandini correctly called, backing over 3.5 goals at 1.90.

At the bottom, Livorno and Catania stay rooted after defeats.

Madrid were the real winners this weekend after their unconvincing 1-0 win at Espanyol was enough to see them close the gap on Barcelona and Atletico, who played out an entertaining but goalless draw in the Spanish capital.

Barca started with Lionel Messi and Neymar on the bench, but the pair appeared during the second half and each had chances to win it for the champions - but Atletico held on for the draw, a result our La Liga expert correctly called last week.

Madrid’s winner at Espanyol came courtesy of Pepe’s header.

Paris Saint-Germain stretched their lead at the top of Ligue 1 to five points after rivals Monaco dropped points on the road at Montpellier with a 1-1 draw on Friday night.

PSG came from behind to win 2-1 at bottom club Ajaccio, but needed a late goal from Matuidi to secure all three points against the spirited strugglers.

Lille succumbed at home to Stade de Reims after two goals in three second half minutes put them on the road to a damaging 2-1 defeat.
