Transfer News Today: Manchester United lead the way for cut-price Alcantara

Forum chatter

According to the chit-chat on the forums, Newcastle have reignited their interest in Brazilian defender Douglas. While the words 'Brazilian' and 'defending' may be considered oxymoron by some, Toon have been tracking this imposing defender for some time. But with his contract having just ended at FC Twente and the player having repeatedly stated his desire to play in the Premier League, Alan Pardew may have competition.

Tabloid speculation

Manchester United will move for Barcelona midfielder Thiago Alcantara, with a £15million bid being readied. David Moyes has had his eyes on the Barca graduate for some time, and hopes to bring in the playmaker as a long-term replacement for the recently retired Paul Scholes. But many of Europe's top clubs are keeping tabs on the 22-year-old, whose release-clause has dropped from €90million to €18million as he failed to complete over 60% of Barca's games last season.

The Daily Bale

Every summer there's a transfer saga that drags on to an inevitable conclusion: usually nothing. In previous years it's been Carlos Tevez and Cesc Fabregas, this time it's Gareth Bale to Real Madrid, which is available at odds of 1.90 with Unibet. Will it happen? Won't it happen? Well the latest news (just in case you still care) is that Real president Florentino Perez has hinted that he'd cough up a world record £85million for the Welshman, £5million more than Los Blancos paid for Cristiano Ronaldo - and even went on to compare Bale with tennis star Rafael Nadal: “It is the same as one would think if we had a tennis section and Nadal was asking us for all this money," Perez said. “For these players that generate and produce income, you can give your whole life.”

Come and get me

It's one of the worst kept secrets in football, but Peter Odemwingie wants to leave West Brom. He made that pretty clear in January when he turned up at Loftus Road and tried to knock down and literally force a move to the since relegated Queens Park Rangers. Now the Nigerian is edging towards a move to Swansea, with Michael Laudrup stepping up his chase for the striker, who is also wanted by Premier League newcomers Crystal Palace and Hull City.

In talks

Liverpool are set to sign Spanish striker Iago Aspas on Tuesday. Aspas, who scored 12 goals in 35 games for Celta Vigo last season,  has arrived in Merseyside to dot the i's and cross the t's of a £7.7million move.  Aspas will be Liverpool's second signing of the summer after Kolo Toure, as the Rodgers revolution enters its second summer.
