Friday's Ligue 1 Betting: Marseille And Nice Set For Feisty Derby Clash

Marseille 1.45, draw 4.10, Nice 7.75 - Friday 19.30 GMT

This is the first derby of the season in France. There is just over an hour between the two cities and they hate each other.

There are also troubles when those two meet and the atmosphere at the Velodrome will be electric on Friday evening.

Marseille got their first win of the season at the weekend away at Guingamp. It was also Marcelo Bielsa’s first win as OM manager and it’s a lot of pressure off the shoulders of the team and the manager. Positioned once again in a 3-3-3-1 formation, goalkeeper Steve Mandanda and his teammates looked more settled and comfortable defensively and tactically.

The team is still short on centre-halves but the Argentine manager knows that he has to do with what he has for the moment.

The pressure will be high with the fans expecting the team to make up for their poor defeat against Montpellier two weeks ago in their first home game of the campaign. André-Pierre Gignac scored the winning goal at Guingamp but then got injured. He is back however and will play on Friday Marseille will need him to cause problems to a Nice defence which struggled against Bordeaux at the weekend.

Claude Puel’s men were beaten 3-1 at home by the leaders, despite scoring first. Unlike Marseille, the visitors will have to do without their best striker, Dario Cvitanich, who is not fully fit yet after his thigh injury.

Last season, Nice managed to beat Marseille three times (home and away in the league and away in the French Cup). Psychologically, that will be a big advantage. However, now that Bielsa and Marseille have got their first win this season, I think they will keep the momentum and beat Nice this weekend.

Gignac is favourite to score first at 4.10, but my best tip is that a red card will be shown at 4.75.

Score prediction: Marseille 2 Nice 0 at 7.00
