Julien Laurens’ Ligue 1 Betting: Cavani eyes Ibrahimovic record while Monaco should finish out the season with a win

WEEK 38

Rennes - Monaco

Monaco were crowned French champions on Wednesday after beating St Etienne (2-0). They have been exceptional through the whole season and travel to Rennes on Saturday evening for the last game of the season. The young Monégasques have partied hard to celebrate the club’s first title in 17 years and they will want to finish the season on a high.

They can reach 95 points with a win at Rennes which would be the second highest tally ever in French top flight history. They are in a great shape going into this game. No one has taken more points away from home than them this season. They are full of confidence and have wonderful momentum with ten league wins in a row now.

Kylian Mbappé was the star of the show in midweek, once again, with a great goal and a top performance. He will lead the line again for Monaco up front on Saturday. Manager Leonardo Jardim could make some changes for the last game of the season with Dirar, Bakayoko, Touré and Germain all possible starters. It will be a very strong Monaco team anyway and they will play to finish the season with a win.

For Rennes, they will celebrate the champions and also want to finish the season on a high in front of their fans. They have won their last two league matches and can still finish in 7th position this season with a win. So they want to spoil Monaco’s party. However, I think Monaco will be up for it and if they are, they won’t be beaten by Rennes. I expect them to finish with a victory.

The odds are in favour of Monaco with an away win at 2.05. The draw is at 3.45 and a Rennes home win is at 3.55.

Kylian Mbappé is favourite to score first at 4.60. My best tip is Monaco to win and both teams to score at 3.30.

Score prediction: Rennes 1 Monaco 2 (8.50)

PSG - Caen

PSG host Caen on Saturday evening and can't catch Monaco at the top of the table now. The Parisians are disappointed by their season and that they could not retain their title and clinch a fifth league in a row. Instead, they have to settle for second but they can still finish the season with 89 points which would be their second highest tally ever.

It is also the last home game of the season and they want to finish well at the Parc des Princes. They are unbeaten at home this season and they want it to stay that way. Manager Unai Emery is without a few players as Thiago Silva, Ben Arfa and Verratti are out, but on the plus side Pastore is in while Angel Di Maria and Thiago Motta are back from suspension.

As such, Emery will be able to field a strong team and Edinson Cavani is just one goal away from Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s record of 50 goals in one season for PSG. He has scored 49 in 48 matches in all competitions.

PSG have a great record at home against Caen with just one defeat ever, back in 2007. If PSG have nothing to play for apart from a perfect home record this season in Ligue 1, it is a different story for Caen. Currently, they are 17th in the table and can still go down if they lose and Bastia win at Marseille or they could end up in the playoff position if Lorient get three points and not Caen. It is a tough task for them. Especially with the absence of their best player and striker Ivan Santini (15 league goals this season). I think PSG will easily beat Caen on Saturday evening.

The odds are massively in favour of PSG with a home win at 1.17. The draw is at 7.50 and a Caen away win is at 14.00.

Edinson Cavani is favourite to score first at 3.00. My best tip is PSG to score over 3.5 goals at 2.55.

Score prediction: PSG 4 Caen 0 (10.00)

Lyon - Nice

This is the big game of the weekend in Ligue 1 although neither team will be playing for anything. Lyon, 4th in the table, host Nice, 3rd but can’t catch them up and can’t be caught by Marseille in 5th either. However, it remains a top game and both teams will want to finish the season well.

Nice lost last weekend against Angers at home (2-0), their first loss at their ground their season. It was very disappointing for them. They lacked creativity and efficiency and were caught on the break and on set pieces. They were not aggressive enough either and the absences of Plea, Cyprien, Dalbert, Eysseric Le Marchand and Ricardo.

Dalbert will be the only one back and once again Nice will be weakened. Mario Balotelli will still be the team’s main threat up front but he has struggled away from home for most of the season. Nice are usually good against top six teams and they will want to do the double over Lyon as well.

For the home side, this game comes at a key moment. There is a lot of uncertainty around the manager Bruno Genesio. He was confirmed for next season by the club’s owner this week but there is still a question mark over him. He needs his team to finish the season well on Saturday.

It has been a disappointing season for Lyon who failed to qualify for the Champions League and missed out on a Europa League final too. The players have been too inconsistent all season, especially defensively where they have not been good enough.

There has been a clash between the club and the captain Maxime Gonalons. It will be a weird game for him if he plays. It could also be the last match in a Lyon shirt for Alexandre Lacazette and Corentin Tolisso. So it will be an emotional evening in Lyon. I think that both teams will be up for it and that the game will end up in a draw.

The odds are massively in favour of Lyon with a home win at 1.60. A draw is at 4.20 and a Nice away win is at 5.10.

Alexandre Lacazette is favourite to score first at 3.60. My best tip is both teams t score in both halves at 8.00.

Score prediction: Lyon 2 Nice 2 (12.50)

Marseille - Bastia

Marseille, who host Bastia on Saturday evening at the Stade Vélodrome, are playing to keep their fifth place in the table. Bordeaux are just a point behind them. So they need a win to make sure that they finish 5th because a draw might not be enough. They are huge favourites against their rivals Bastia who are fighting to stay up.

Marseille are in a good run of results at the moment with no defeat in their last ten league matches! They only drew at Bordeaux last weekend (1-1) despite being the better side. Florian Thauvin and Bafetimbi Gomis will lead the line up front in Rudi Garcia’s 4-3-3 formation. But there will be no Dimitri Payet as the French international is suspended.

So Remi Cabella will come in to take his place. Garcia, the OM manager, is confident his players can deliver this 5th place with a good performance in front of a sell out crowd at the Velodrome.

The players want to finish the season well and keep their momentum for next season. Marseille have been solid at home in the league with just two defeats (against Monaco and PSG) all season. And they have an incredible record at home in the league against Bastia with just one defeat in 28 matches, back in 1972!

Bastia will be playing for their survival though. They are currently second from bottom in 19th place, just one point behind 18th and two behind 17th though. They will give their best shot against Marseille and will be very aggressive and up for it as well. They don’t want to have any regrets after the game. However, I don’t think that Marseille will slip up and I can see them winning convincingly.

The odds are massively in favour of Marseille with a home win at 1.30. A draw is at 5.60 and a Bastia away win is at 9.00.

Bafetimbi Gomis is favourite to score first at 4.10. My best tip is Marseille to win without conceding a goal at 2.18.

Score prediction: Marseille 2 Bastia 0 (8.00)
