PSG – Marseille – Sunday 19:45 GMT
This is the big game of the weekend in Ligue 1 on Sunday evening, the first Classique of the season between arch rivals PSG and Marseille. It is the biggest game in French football alongside the Rhone Derby. And it is fascinating to look forward to it.
PSG are at home at the Parc des Princes where they are unbeaten since March in all competitions. They beat Basel there on Wednesday (3-0) in the Champions League but were not very convincing. They have had and up and down start to the season in the league too with two defeats already away at Monaco and Toulouse. This is their first real test at home though, even if Marseille are only 12th in the table. PSG are second now, just behind Nice.
Thiago Motta is a big doubt and Javier Pastore is out injured but everybody else is available. Edinson Cavani is the man in form for the Parisians with 16 goals in his last 12 matches for club and country. He has netted a goal every 65 minutes for PSG this season. He is unstoppable at the moment but the problems lie in defence. The balance of the team is not right yet and PSG are too exposed defensively. They will need to get it right on Sunday
The offensive potential of Marseille is very interesting and Paris will have to be careful. However, they have an incredible record against their rivals, going 12 games in a row now without a defeat, including 10 wins in a row now in all competitions!
It is a huge game for Marseille. They have just appointed a new manager in Rudy Garcia, the former Lille and AS Roma manager, this week. He is the right person for a very high pressured job and he will be on the bench on Sunday for his first game in charge. He will take over a team in 12th position in the table, very inconsistent and with big defensive weaknesses. But going forward, they are very good and he can make them play well together.
Lassana Diarra is now back to full fitness and he will have a big role to play in this match, like Bafétimbi Gomis up front, who is on a good scoring streak. I think this game comes a bit too soon though for Garcia and that PSG will win but quite narrowly.
The odds are massively in favour of PSG with a home win at 1.24. The draw is at 6.00 and a Marseille away win is at 13.00.
Edinson Cavani is favourite to score first at 3.30. My best tip is PSG to win and both teams to score at 2.85.
Score prediction: PSG 2 Marseille 1 at 9.50
