Marseille – Guingamp - 20:00GMT
After a win on penalties at Caen in the French Cup last weekend with almost a reserve team, Marseille host Guingamp on Sunday to start 2016 in the league. L’OM’s home form has been really poor so far this season, with only two wins in 10 league games at the Stade Velodrome. They have to improve their results at home if they want to finish in the top three. They are currently only 10th in the table, six points clear of Caen in third place. They are conceding too many goals.
The good news for Marseille is that two of their best players have signed new contracts at the club: Benjamin Mendy is now under contract until 2019 and Michy Batshuayi until 2020. The Belgian striker has been, with Lassana Diarra, the clubs best player in the first half of the season. He has scored 11 goals in 19 league games and created many chances too. Batshuayi’s long term commitment has boosted the team but the case of Steve Mandanda has had the opposite effect.
The captain and goalkeeper is out of contract in June and could be leaving in January. It has had a negative impact on the team. In team news, Cabella and Mendy are both out for this game but Marseille might not suffer too much of their absence.
Guingamp, on the other hand, are one of the worst teams away from home this season. They have only won twice away from the Roudourou stadium in the league this term, and they have won once in Marseille in eight visits.
Jocelyn Gourvennec’s men are 18th in the table, two points behind the first team outside of the bottom three and they desperately need points. They will fight until the end and are trying to bring new players in this transfer window. However, I think they will be beaten by Marseille at the Velodrome on Sunday night.
The odds are massively in favour of Marseille with a home win at 1.58. The draw is at 3.80 and a Guingamp away win is at 6.50.
Michy Batshuayi is favourite to score first at 4.10 but my best tip is both teams to score and Marseille to win at 4.10.
Score prediction: Marseille 2 Guingamp 1 at 10.00
