Julien Laurens' Ligue 1 Betting: Marseille Set For More Misery On Trip To Rennes

Rennes – Marseille – 20:00 GMT

Marseille travel to Rennes on Thursday evening after a new disappointment at home in the league on Sunday. L’OM are without a win in their five last league matches at home. They were held 3-3 by Monaco on Sunday and defended poorly and despite taking the lead. It showed the problems at home for Marseille this season, where they are fragile and lack a lot of confidence. Defensively, they were terrible against Monaco, conceding three goals at home, especially Karim Rekik, their summer signing from Manchester City.

Michel is struggling to lead his team to victory at the Velodrome. They are doing better away from home though, with three wins in a row in the league. They are more solid, maybe because there is less pressure on them from the home fans, but they need a result at Rennes on Thursday. They are just 11th in the table, seven points behind the Champions League places. They need to get on a good run before the Christmas break if they want to remain in the hunt in the new year. L’OM have a good record at Rennes where they haven’t lost since 2008 in Ligue 1. They will rely on Michy Batshuayi, their top scorer with 10 in 15 league games so far.

So Marseille will be favourites on Thursday but Rennes will be a tricky opponent. They are still inconsistent but have only lost one of their last six games in all competitions and that was against PSG. They are capable of great things but they also have a habit of going missing as well.

Key man Paul-George Ntep is out until Christmas at least. But they have plenty of cover like Jeremy Boga, on loan from Chelsea, who scored a beauty at the weekend in the draw with Reims, or Juan Quintero, the Colombian international. Gourcuff is still not ready to come back and Doucouré, their best player so far this season, is a big doubt after missing the game at the weekend. The atmosphere will be great at the stadium and I think they will play well on Thursday and beat Marseille.

The odds are quite even with a Marseille away win at 2.55. The draw is at 3.20 and a Rennes home win is at 2.90.

Michy Batshuayi is favourite to score first at 5.25 but my best tip is a Rennes win and both teams to score at 6.50.

Score prediction: Rennes 2 Marseille 1 at 13.00
