Laurens: Lyon can put pressure on Ligue 1 title favourites with another win on Friday night

Rennes v Lyon, Friday 7.45pm

Lyon, who travelled to Rennes on Friday evening, started their season in great fashion last weekend at home by hammering Strasbourg. L’OL looked really good going forward especially and they will try to build on that away at Rennes. It will be a far trickier encounter but Lyon are looking good.

Only Ferland Mendy, their second choice left back, is out injured but everybody else is available. They will play in a 4-2-3-1 formation again with Nabil Fekir, the new captain, just behind Mariano Diaz. They both scored twice last weekend and made a great impression.

Bertrand Traoré, signed from Chelsea, looked sharp on the right as well. Defensively, they were a bit shaky at times but Marcelo, their new centre half, needs a bit of time to adapt. Lyon struggled at times away from home last season. However, they have a great record away at Rennes where they lost only once in their last eight visits in Ligue 1.

Lyon are currently top of the table and will already put pressure on the other big clubs in the league if they can get six points out of six in their first two matches of the season.

Rennes got a draw away at newly promoted Troyes last weekend, which was not a great result for them. They had too many draws last season and it looks like they have started in the same way this campaign as well. The manager Christian Gourcuff could change his back four to make it more solid against Lyon’s offensive power.

Bensebaini could start as left back with Ludovic Baal pushing as left midfield to make the left hand side of the team more solid. Jordan Tell, 19, who scored on his debut last weekend, should start up front with Sarr. Yoann Gourcuff, on the other hand, is still out. I think Lyon are in much better form than Rennes and will get the three points.

The odds are in favour of Lyon with an away win at 2.00. A draw is at 3.55 and a Rennes home win is at 3.65.

Mariano Diaz is favourite to score first at 5.20. My best tip is Lyon to win with both teams scoring at 3.60.

Score prediction: Rennes 1 Lyon 2 (8.50)
