Caen 4.00, draw 3.35, Marseille 1.95 – Saturday 16.00 GMT
Marseille are the team of this start of the season. Marcelo Bielsa’s men are totally on fire at the moment after they won their last six league games with an overall goal difference of +16! They are unstoppable offensively, so much that André Pierre Gignac and Dimitri Payet, their two best players so far this season, have been called back in the France squad by Didier Deschamps.
The league leaders (two points clear of Bordeaux, five of PSG) deserve it as well as they have been superb in the first eight league games. Bielsa has found the right recipe for his team with a lot of pace, energy and movement. Defensively, it is a bit more difficult at times, as we saw last Sunday against St Etienne at the Stade Velodrome. Marseille blew their opponent away in the first half but struggled more after the break and could have dropped points. But the confidence and the momentum coming out of this team is unbelievable.
The fans support is also amazing, as is Bielsa’s tactical skills. He is, as expected, the real sensation of the season so far. ‘El Loco’ and his men will look to continue their great run of form away at Caen on Saturday.
It is not an easy trip but it’s not hell either. Lille and PSG won there already this season for example. The promoted side, 13th in the table (but only two points clear of bottom team Guingamp), has been more comfortable away from home so far this season. They are yet to win in their stadium after three defeats in three games but they did face strong opposition. But they haven’t even scored at home this season, and to make things worse, they haven’t beaten Marseille at home since 1997.
But it is a team with a lot of heart. Against PSG, they never gave up, for example, and they created chances. They have a lot of talented young players, mixed with some more experienced ones. But they are too naive. They will make life difficult for Marseille but they won’t be able to stop the Bielsa machine and we could see another hammering.
André Pierre Gignac is favourite to score first at 4.10 but my best tip is the away team to win both halves at 5.60.
Score prediction: Caen 0 Marseille 3 at 16.00
