Paris can be crowned champions tomorrow against Rennes at the Parc des Princes.
They will win the league if they win but a draw could be enough too, and could be champions even before playing if Monaco don’t beat Guingamp at home in an earlier kick off. Zlatan Ibrahimovic is back for this game.
Paris SG 1.21 Rennes 13.00
PSG missed the chance to win the league ten days ago at Sochaux with a very disappointing draw (1-1). Ibrahimovic, who has been missing for five weeks, is back for the game and it’s a massive boost. Without him, the team seemed lost and put in some poor performances. He is the star of the team and brings a lot of fighting spirit and character. His return is obviously great news for Paris and the fans as the club is preparing for the title celebrations. There are a lot of expectations over his comeback but he loves that and will thrive on it. They will be champions for the second year in a row for the first time in the club’s history.
In Ibra’s absence, the leaders have been very disappointing. They even deserved to lose at Sochaux in the last game as collectively and individually they have been playing way below their level for the last three months. However, the title is so close now and Ibra is back so they will be really up for it and you can expect them to get back to their best and walk all over their opponent tomorrow in front of a sell-out crowd. PSG are unbeaten at home in the league since November 2012 and their last defeat in Ligue 1 at home was against Rennes actually, last season! But despite their recent slip ups (defeat at Lyon and Chelsea, draw at Sochaux), they will be back to their best.
Rennes are 15th in the table, still fighting against relegation. They are only three points clear of Sochaux, the first team in the relegation zone and are in trouble. Their form is poor (one win in their last six games in all competitions) and they were beaten in the Cup final on Saturday by Guingamp (2-0). They will try to spoil PSG’s party but they are so low in confidence and so short of options that it looks impossible. They did beat PSG last season and are the last ones to have done that in the league at the Parc des Princes but on such a big night for PSG, you fear for Rennes tomorrow.
PSG to win both halves at 2.50
Ibra to score on his return at 1.52
Score prediction: PSG 3-0 Rennes 7.50
Monaco 1.55 Guingamp 5.75
Monaco have now secured second place in the table and are assured to play the group stages of the Champions League next season. It is a great achievement for a team promoted from Ligue 2 this season, even with all the investment made last summer and the arrival of Falcao and co. Claudio Ranieri and his players now want to finish the season in the best way possible. They want three more wins to take their points tally to 84 which would be the best in the club’s history. This is not their last home game but they have a revenge to take tomorrow on Guingamp. They lost there in the Cup semi-final (3-1) last month after extra time and after a very poor performance. So they want to make up for that unacceptable defeat. They have never lost at home to Guingamp in the league in their history and they don’t intend to start tomorrow.
Monaco have been very strong at home all season with just one defeat (against Valenciennes) and, despite their Cup loss, their confidence is still high. Dimitar Berbatov has been a real star since he joined the club back in January and he is having a very positive impact already. He scored Monaco’s only goal at Guingamp in the Cup actually. James Rodriguez has been nominated for Player and young player of the year and he is almost certain to get the YPOTY trophy. He will lead his team once again tomorrow.
Guingamp is still on cloud nine after their incredible Cup win last Saturday against neighbours and rival Rennes (2-0). They were the outsider and they pulled out a great win which qualifies them for Europe. It is an amazing achievement but they need to stay up to make sure this is a great season. They are in nig danger though as they are just a point above Sochaux, the first team in the relegation zone. They have lost five of their last six league games. They need points tomorrow and they know how to upset Monaco as they have done in the Cup last month. They have been good away from home this campaign and, as we said, have never beaten Monaco at the Stade Louis II in the league.
It’s a big mountain to climb but they are capable of anything. However, this one will be too difficult for them and I think they will get beaten tomorrow although they will make life difficult for Monaco.
Best bet: Under 1.5 goals scored at 3.80
Score prediction: Monaco 1-0 Guingamp 7.00
