It's official, Arsenal have completed the signing of Brazilian centre-back Gabriel Paulista from Villarreal, but just who is the defender and how will he fit in at the Gunners?
Here are 10 things you need to know about the newest Premier League recruit:
The 24-year-old Paulista was born in Sao Paulo, Brazil on November 26th 1990, coming into the world on exactly the same day as new teammate Danny Welbeck. Double birthday party anyone?
Vocalist and The Voice chair-spinner Rita Ora was also born on that very same day in 1990, whilst Paulista also shares a birthday with (you’ll never beat) Des Walker, Tina Turner and Natasha Bedingfield. Remember her?
Despite being born in Sao Paulo, the young Paulista came through the ranks at the Salvador club Vitoria where he played alongside the former Man City midfielder Geovanni. The club was also the same breeding ground for the likes of ex-AC Milan goalkeeper Dida and 2014 World Team of the Year member and FIFTY MILLION POUND defender David Luiz. That still sounds funny.
He made his debut at 19, and was chosen as the best central defender in the Campeonato Baiano regional tournament in 2013 as Vitoria won the title for the 27th occasion. That’s the same amount of times the New York Yankees have won the World Series.
That form alerted Villarreal boss Marcelinho to his promise, and the defender was one of the new manager’s first signings when he took over at El Madrigal. He signed a five-year contract and made his debut in a 1-1 draw against Atletico Madrid in November 2013.
His first campaign was largely impressive, although he did produce this Djimi Traore-esque moment of comedy to score an own goal against Barcelona. They are good enough to score on their own, Gabriel.
After 21 appearances in his first campaign at the club he’s played in every single one of Villarreal’s 19 league matches this season, during which they’ve conceded only 17 goals, just two more than Real Madrid.
He’s also made his debut in European competition this season, playing in all eight of Villarreal’s matches in the Europa League, during which they’ve kept four clean sheets and lost just once.
The website WhoScored.com characterises Paulista as someone whose strengths lie in intercepting and blocking the ball, whilst fitting in with Arsenal’s pretty passing might be a problem as he apparently “likes to play long balls” and “clears the ball out of defence often.” On your head, Alexis.
Despite his promise, Paulista has never represented Brazil at any level, and so the Gunners are going to have to convince the Home Office that he is an “exceptional talent” in order to get him a work permit. Better not show them that own goal Vine above then…
