It was a weekend in which the humble own goal was the star.
QPR defenders Richard Dunne (a specialist in the art) and Steven Caulker combined to give Liverpool the three points from a crazy match at Loftus Road, but not even their calamities could beat Sunderland’s hapless Santiago Vergini and his blockbusting own goal at Southampton which set the scene for the Black Cats’ 8-0 loss.
We’ll deal with Vergini later, as he takes pride of place in our collection of howlers.
Olof Mellberg – Birmingham v Aston Villa
That’s right, Swedish defender Olof Mellberg still takes the ‘credit’ for this OG despite doing nothing more than taking a routine throw-in back to his goalkeeper.
To be fair though, when your goalkeeper is Peter Enckelman then is anything really routine?.
Tony Popovic – Portsmouth v Crystal Palace
I defy any of the great players of today to reproduce the finish that Tony Popovic does here. Messi? Ronaldo? Hal Robson-Kanu? You can’t do it, can you?
Genius. What a player.
Frank Sinclair – Middlesbrough v Leicester
Whilst Richard Dunne might have cornered the market in the sheer accumulation of own goals, if you wanted a spectacular OG in the early noughties you’d call on Frank Sinclair.
This effort at Middlesbrough is so bad that the cameraman actually considers not showing it at first, before logic takes over and we all get to have a laugh.
Rio Ferdinand – Portsmouth v Manchester United
Perhaps there’s something about that end of Fratton Park?
Rio Ferdinand leaves Edwin van der Sar beaten all ends up here, but what’s even better is the little strop he throws as he marches off after it. Merked!
Santiago Vergini – Southampton v Sunderland
Ah, here we are, the star of our show.
I don’t know about you but if I was him I’d have celebrated. He’d never connected this well before in his life!
To make matters worse for the Sunderland defender, the invention of Vines means we can watch this over and over again without having to click play like you do on a YouTube video. It never rains...
