Transfer News Today: Can Manchester United really land Kevin Strootman?

Today we examine Arsenal’s attempts to sign another German playmaker, Tottenham targeting one of their former players, Manchester United’s hunt for a new midfielder and Jose Mourinho’s claim that he won’t sign anyone in January...

Forum Chatter

Arsenal are favourites to sign the Schalke playmaker Julian Draxler.

Why it will happen: Draxler is a fantastic talent and at just 20-years old he is the perfect age for Arsene Wenger to mould the player into a great.

Why it won’t happen: The one area of the Arsenal squad that doesn’t need reinforcing is midfield, with the club already boasting a number of attacking talents.

Tabloid Speculation

Spurs are the latest club to be linked with their former striker Dimitar Berbatov.

Why it will happen: Tottenham need a new striker in January, with Jermain Defoe rumoured to be leaving and Emmanuel Adebayor out in the cold. Berbatov is a cut-price option of proven quality.

Why it won’t happen: Spurs had the chance to sign Berbatov when the player left Manchester United. Would he prove too lazy for Andre Villas-Boas’ tastes?

Tabloid Speculation II

Manchester United will bid for Roma’s Kevin Strootman in January.

Why it will happen: David Moyes’ side are desperate to sign a quality midfielder and the energetic Dutchman fits the bill. Results are currently so bad that they would be prepared to pay whatever it takes to land the right player.

Why it won’t happen: Strootman only signed for Roma this summer and with his side only three points off the top of Serie A, it’s unlikely that they would sanction the sale of one of their best players.

No Deal

Jose Mourinho claims that he won’t buy a player in the January transfer window, despite the poor record of his strikers Fernando Torres, Samuel Eto’o and Demba Ba this season.

Why it will happen: January is a very difficult time to buy a world class striker and Mourinho has the luxury of having several goalscoring midfielders in his squad.

Why it won’t happen: If Chelsea drop more points before Christmas then a need for a striker might seem more pressing. Who would believe anything that the arch manipulator Mourinho says, anyway?
