Why it will happen: Shaw looks likely to become Ashley Cole’s eventual long-term successor in the England team and is a Chelsea fan.

Why it won’t happen: The youngster is playing every week for a successful Southampton team, who don’t need to sell their best young players any more. He would be wise to stay put.

Tabloid Speculation

Manchester United and Tottenham are battling to buy the Inter Milan midfielder Fredy Guarin for £10m.

Why it will happen: Andre Villas-Boas managed Guarin at Porto, while David Moyes in keen to add reinforcements to his midfield.

Why it won’t happen: Do either club really need him? Spurs already have a lot of midfielders. Guarin currently plays as a number 10 for Inter - a position when United have plenty of options.

Freebie Frenzy

Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United are all interested in signing Real Madrid’s Xabi Alonso when his contract expires this summer.

Why it will happen: Alonso would add something to any of the aforementioned clubs’ midfields. He is revered at Anfield, Jose Mourinho worked with him in Madrid and would add quality at Old Trafford.

Why it won’t happen: Alonso is still an important figure for Real and they look a lesser side when he’s missing. He could well sign a new contract.

No Deal

Crystal Palace manager Tony Pulis has claimed that they club will not do a deal for Blackburn’s Jordan Rhodes, because they can’t afford him.

Why it will happen: Blackburn are still in the hunt for a play-off place in the Championship and would need a big fee to convince them to sell their top scorer.

Why it won’t happen: Pulis has quickly picked up results at Palace. If they continue to gain points and give themselves a chance of staying up, than buying Rhodes could prove a shrewd investment, regardless of the price.
