Transfer News Today: Wayne Rooney to quit Manchester United for Chelsea?

Today we look at a potential loan swoop for Cardiff, Wayne Rooney’s future, two forwards linked with Spurs and a player who wants to join Arsenal

Forum chatter

New Cardiff boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will return to Manchester United to take Wilfried Zaha on loan for the rest of the season.

Why it will happen: Zaha desperately needs first-team football and Solskjaer obviously has strong United links.

Why it won’t happen: The England international wants to establish himself at United, whilst if he is to go anywhere on loan it is likely to be former club Crystal Palace.

Tabloid speculation

Wayne Rooney will reject Manchester United’s offer of a new contract and sign for Chelsea for £30million.

Why it will happen: United are in decline, Rooney wanted this move last summer and if they fail to make the top four he’ll be eyeing the exit.

Why it won’t happen: We’ve been here before with Rooney, and a more lucrative contract offer is likely to see him stay at Old Trafford again.

Double trouble

Tottenham are targeting Juventus pair Mirko Vucinic and Fabio Quagliarella to replace Jermain Defoe, who is off to Toronto.

Why it will happen: Defoe can’t be a benchwarmer forever, and the Italian club's pair would give Spurs a greater cutting edge in Tim Sherwood’s 4-4-2 formation.

Why it won’t happen: The duo are both in their 30s, and Sherwood has shown a determination to trust in youth during his brief time in charge.

‘Come and get me’ plea

Porto’s Jackson Martinez has revealed that he was an Arsenal fan as a child, and that he wants to join the Gunners.

Why it will happen: The Gunners need a forward in addition to Olivier Giroud and Nicklas Bendtner, and the freescoring Colombian would fit the bill.

Why it won’t happen: Chelsea have been linked with Martinez in the past, and if it becomes a bidding war with the Gunners there is only likely to be one winner.
