Borussia Dortmund are rumoured to be looking at Atletico Madrid’s striker Diego Costa as a replacement for Robert Lewandowski, who looks set to leave the club on a free transfer next summer.

Why it will happen: Dortmund will need a top level striker to fill Lewandowski’s boots and with Costa having scored 16 goals in 17 games this season, he looks good enough to take on the challenge.

Why it won’t happen: Lewandowski will leave on a free leaving Dortmund struggling to find the sort of money that it would take to buy Costa from an Atletico Madrid side that are currently flying high in La Liga. There’s also the fact that Costa, though being born Brazilian, has recently pledged his international allegiance to Spain, suggesting that he’s pretty settled in the country.

Arsenal’s hunt to buy another striker so that they don’t have to start with Nicklas Bendtner on the bench, has taken a turn towards Manchester City’s Edin Dzeko.

Why it will happen: With the signing of Mesut Ozil, Arsenal proved that they are willing to spend big to get the right man. Dzeko would make a great alternative to Olivier Giroud.

Why it won’t happen: Why would title-chasing Manchester City sell a player to league leaders Arsenal and solve one of their major problems? There’s also the fact that City have actually used Dzeko a lot this season. If he’s sold, it will probably be outside the Premier League (Dortmund?) and not until the end of the season.

Tabloid Speculation

It’s also suggested today that Manchester City will receive a summer bid from Barcelona for their in-form striker Sergio Aguero

Why it will happen: A player as talented as Aguero deserves to play for a European super club at some point during his career. Manchester City might well be the richest club in the world, but they are far from being the biggest. Aguero’s head could easily be turned by the mouth-watering prospect of forming a forward line alongside Lionel Messi and Neymar.

Why it won’t happen: Manchester City have so much money that they don’t have to sell to anyone. City could justifiably use Gareth Bale’s summer transfer fee as a starting point in negotiations and that would likely prove too expensive, even for Barcelona.

Tabloid Speculation II

Chelsea’s Demba Ba wants to leave the club in January and move to Turkey.

Why it will happen: Ba has not proved a success at Stamford Bridge and Jose Mourinho obviously prefers the talents of his other strikers Fernando Torres and Samuel Eto’o. He has been linked with a move to Galatasaray in the past and with Chelsea apparently interested in Gala’s Burak Yilmaz, a part-exchange deal could be done.

Why it won’t happen: Galatasaray have a chance of progressing to the knockout stages of the Champions League, in which case they would not want to lose Yilmaz. That would leave Chelsea needing to find another striker in order to let Ba leave, which is never an easy task in January.
