Spurs will make a move for Shinji Kagawa in the January transfer window.

Why it will happen: Tottenham are struggling for creativity and the talented Kagawa cannot get into the Manchester United side.

Why it won’t happen: Manchester United will not want to strengthen a team that are still in the mix for Champions League qualification and Spurs are in need of a player that is creative in deeper areas.

Manchester City and Arsenal will do battle for the Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas in January.

Why it will happen: Casillas is not getting regular football at Madrid, with Diego Lopez being preferred between the posts. Casillas will find that troubling during a World Cup year and will want to join a high profile side.

Why it won’t happen: Arsenal did not buy a new goalkeper when Wojciech Szczesny was playing badly, so why would they make a move for him at a time when he seems to have turned the corner? With their Barcelona connections, Manchester City are far more likely to wait until the summer and buy Victor Valdes.

Tabloid Speculation

The new Crystal Palace manager Tony Pulis is said to be planning a January raid for the Blackburn striker Jordan Rhodes.

Why it will happen: Pulis will want to sign a target man as soon as possible, as he looks to model his Crystal Palace side upon the one he successfully built at Stoke.

Why it won’t happen: Rhodes will undoubtedly make the step up to the Premier League sooner rather than later, but will he want to join a side that look destined to be back in the Championship next season?

Everton are favourites to land the Seattle Sounders midfielder Clint Dempsey on loan in January.

Why it will happen: It has been agreed that Dempsey will make a loan move back to the Premier League, in order to keep him fit in the build up for the World Cup.

Why it won’t happen: Dempsey is a proven Premier League goalscorer but where will he fit in at an Everton side already full of attacking talent?
