Juventus - Napoli
The scudetto will not be decided in Turin on Saturday night, but there is certainly scope for either contender to strike a significant blow. Napoli would go five points clear with a victory: a significant advantage for a team that has not dropped one its last eight league matches. But defeat would see them overtaken by a Juventus side whose own winning streak stands at 14 games.
There is an element of the unstoppable force coming up against the immovable object. Gonzalo Higuaín is averaging a goal a game for Napoli, and has found the net at least once in all of the last six. But Gigi Buffon has kept five consecutive clean sheets.
If there is a reason to believe that the striker might win that duel within a duel, it is that the hosts will be missing the injured Giorgio Chiellini in central defence. Juventus are missing other important players, such as Sami Khedira and Mario Mandzukic, too. It speaks to the depth of the champions’ squad that they still look formidable all the same.
Draw and both teams to score - 4.60
Empoli - Frosinone
A good 15 points separate these two teams, but a shared record of just four each from the past five rounds of fixtures suggests that the gulf in performance today is smaller than it had been earlier in the season. Both have taken an identical 5-1 shellacking from Napoli since the start of 2016 as well.
Frosinone have been especially disastrous away from home, conceding an average of 3.5 goals in their last six matches outside of the Stadio Matusa. But only four teams in all of Serie A have scored less often at their own stadium than Empoli, making me think that this one could be a little bit different.
Under 2.5 goals - 2.06
Chievo - Sassuolo
Winless in six matches, Sassuolo could do worse than looking to the example of their next opponents - who just ended an identical run by beating Torino. Close together in midtable, but distant from the European places and not yet safe from relegation, both sides may view this as an occasion on which avoiding defeat is the greater priority than pursuing all three points.
