Transfer News Today: Barcelona to beat Arsenal to Dortmund ace

West Ham are chasing Milito, Barca join race for Gundogan, United renew interest in Sneijder and Eto'o set for MLS swansong...

Forum chatter

West Ham are set to make a shock January move for Inter Milan striker, Diego Milito. The Argentine striker, Inter’s Champions League final hero in 2010, is out of contract in the summer.

Why it will happen: Ageing player at the end of his career with a point to prove = typical Sam Allardyce signing.

Why it won’t happen: Relying on a washed up 34-year-old with no Premier League experience is never advisable.

Tabloid speculation I

Dortmund playmaker Ilkay Gundogan is set to be the subject of a January bidding war, with the news that Barcelona have stepped up their interest in the German international.

Why it will happen: Barca are in need of a creative midfielder to replace the ageing Xavi-Iniesta axis, and will have the money to outspend Arsenal if they need to.

Why it won’t happen: With Mario Gotze gone, Gundogan is central to Dortmund's plans and they won't be keen on losing him. He heralds from the North Rhine-Westphalia region of Germany and may not want to leave his comfort zone.

Tabloid speculation II

Manchester United are set to resurrect their interest in Dutch playmaker Wesley Sneijder. The Galatasaray midfielder came close to signing for United two seasons ago, and David Moyes is keen to renew that interest.

Why it will happen: Sneijder is no longer at the peak of his powers and would come at a cut price – around £13million.

Why it won’t happen: Sneijder may feel that moving to United is no longer the prestigious career move it once was.

In talks

Chelsea’s Samuel Eto’o is reportedly in talks over a move to the MLS in the United States.

Why it will happen: Eto’o is in the twilight of his career and, at 32, is approaching his last World Cup. He will feel the time is right to coast towards retirement across the pond.

Why it won’t happen: Eto’o knows that joining the MLS is waving goodbye to top level football and, having only just joined Chelsea, will feel he has once last shot at winning major European honours at Stamford Bridge.
