Liverpool and Everton are in the race to sign former Chelsea forward Salomon Kalou. The Ivorian, who has played at French club Lille for the past two seasons, could leave after his future was deemed uncertain by manager Rene Giraud. Kalou is valued at around £7million.
Why it will work: Kalou knows the Premier League like the back of his hand and would need little time to settle in.
Why it won't work: Kalou hasn't set the world alight at Lille and, at £7million, could be seen as a risk.
Michael Dawson’s proposed move to Hull City has hit a stumbling block, with the Tottenham skipper unable to agree terms with Steve Bruce’s side. Dawson, 30, wants a four-year deal, rather than the three-year deal he is being offered, and could now consider alternative options. Harry Redknapp's QPR are monitoring the situation.
Why it will work: Dawson is a former England centre-back in need of a new challenge. Hull would be the perfect place for him to get back to his best.
Why it won't work: Dawson was abysmal at times last season and, at 30, has his doubters.

Manchester United are closing in on the signing of Real Madrid star Angel di Maria, who will cost them a record £38million, eclipsing the £37.1million United paid Chelsea for Juan Mata. Winger Di Maria is expected to follow Luke Shaw and Ander Herrera into Old Trafford, with new manager Louis van Gaal also eager to secure a deal for key target Arturo Vidal.
Why it will work: Di Maria is a brilliantly talented footballer, proven at the highest level. He'd bring Champions League pedigree and would attract other big players. United must sign this man.
Why it won't work: Does Di Maria want to swap Madrid for Manchester? Even on the periphery at Real Madrid, he starred in the most recent Champions League final. United can't even offer him the Europa League this term.
