Napoli move for Javi Garcia, United make second Herrera bid, Cabaye wants out and Defoe is off to Canada...
Napoli are weighing up a January swoop for Manchester City midfielder Javi Garcia. Rafael Benitez is looking to strengthen in midfield and has identified the former Benfica star as the man he wants.
Why it will happen: Garcia has been a peripheral member of the City squad under both Roberto Mancini and current boss Manuel Pellegrini. He’ll see a move to Italy as a chance to play regular games, which he'll need if he stands any chance of making the Spanish national squad for next sumnmer's World Cup.
Why it won’t happen: City see Garcia as a valuable squad player and may prefer to loan him with a recall option.
Manchester United are plotting a second bid for Athletic Bilbao star Ander Herrera in January. David Moyes missed out on Herrera in the summer when their offer of €24million was rejected, prompting talk that United will be made to pay around €30million.
Why it will happen: United’s interest in Herrera is no secret and the player will relish the chance to play regular Champions League football. He’s also a quality playmaker, exactly what United need.
Why it won’t happen: United may baulk at the price, especially if they are forced to cough up €36million, the value of Herrera’s buy-out clause.
Come and get me
Yohan Cabaye has opened the door to a move away from St James’s Park by suggesting he will assess his future in the summer. "I miss the Champions League. I'll finish this season with Newcastle and concentrate on the coming months and then we'll see," he told RTL. Liverpool and Arsenal have both been alerted.
Why it will happen: As Cabaye said, he wants to play in the Champions League again – and he isn’t getting close to that at Newcastle.
Why it won’t happen: Newcastle will not want to lose the jewel of their midfield crown.
Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe is in talks with Toronto over a sensational £6million move to the MLS club. It is thought Defoe is mulling over an offer of £90,000-a-week.
Why it will happen: Defoe’s best days are probably behind him and this represents an exciting new challenge for the striker.
Why it won’t happen: Defoe may decide against the move – or at least delay it until the summer – as he’ll want to maximise his chances of playing for England in Brazil next summer.
