Transfer News Today: Man United On The Verge of £37m Mata Swoop

United to confirm Mata deal and eye Guarin, Zaha off to Cardiff and Liverpool close on Salah, plus other rumours...

Forum chatter

Manchester United could sign another midfielder this month, with Inter Milan’s Fredy Guarin being lined up in a possible swap deal with Javier Hernandez.

Why it will happen: United have the wind in their sales having agreed a deal for Mata, and that could attract Guarin to join. Guarin is just the kind of steely midfielder David Moyes craves.

Why it won’t happen: Guarin has been linked with almost every club in Europe this window. Are United just the latest?

Transfer speculation II

Wilfried Zaha is close to leaving Manchester United for Cardiff on a loan deal until the end of the season.

Why it will happen: Zaha has endured a troubled spell at United and will be itching to get out of there. He’s reportedly clashed with David Moyes again after turning up 45 minutes late to a reserve game. The Ole Gunnar Solksjaer factor could tip the balance in Cardiff’s favour…

Why it won’t happen: Moyes has said he’d only let Zaha leave on loan if he had no injuries and adequate cover. With Ashley Young struggling for fitness and Nani linked with a move to Sporting, Zaha’s hopes may yet be dashed…

In talks

Liverpool are inching closer to completing a deal for Basel winger Mohamed Salah for around £10million.

Why it will happen: Salah is one of the most coveted names in Europe at the moment. £10million represents good value for a player who shone in the Champions League against Chelsea.

Why it won’t happen: But could Chelsea hijack the deal? Having sold Mata, they are reportedly considering a move for Salah.

Signed, sealed... almost delivered

Manchester United will today announce the £37million signing of Juan Mata on a four-and-a-half year deal, smashing their club record transfer fee of £30.75 for Dimitar Berbatov in 2008.

Why it will happen: Mata sat out training on Wednesday and said farewell to his teammates. He’s ready.

Why it won’t happen: All he requires now is Jose’s blessing… Will he get it?
