Transfer News Today: Monaco Make Their Move For Chelsea Legend

Forum chatter

Liverpool have enquired about a move for Southampton striker Jay Rodriguez, after their deal for Loic Remy fell through.

Our view: If Liverpool think they’ll fill the void Luis Suarez has left by signing Rodriguez, then they’re barking up the wrong tree. James Rodriguez? Yes. Jay Rodriguez? No sir.

Staying put

Jan Vertonghen is set to end weeks of debate about his future by signing a new contract at Tottenham, worth £60,000-a-week.

Our view: Having secured Hugo Lloris on a new deal, keeping Vertonghen is another boost for new Spurs boss Maurico Pochettino. Vertonghen had grown frustrated at having to play left-back under Andre Villas-Boas and was a target for Barcelona, but Spurs have done well to fend off interest in one of their key players.

Tabloid speculation

Monaco have opened talks with Chelsea over the transfer of Chelsea star Petr Cech, who could depart for as little as £5million.

Our view: Cech will be feeling the heat following the arrival of Thibaut Courtois from a hugely successful loan spell at Atletico Madrid. Chelsea are open to the deal going through as they have cover for Courtois in the shape of Mark Schwarzer, and selling to Monaco could open the door for a deal for striker Radamel Falcao. The ball is in Cech’s court, with the goalkeeper set to decide on his future in the coming days.

In talks

Manchester United are set to lose out on Real Madrid star Angel di Maria, who looks poised to join PSG in a £45million deal.

Our view: United were said to have offered £37million for Di Maria, but the Argentina winger clearly has his heart set on a move to the French champions. The draw of Champions League football is something money can’t buy for United at the moment.

Signed, sealed, delivered

Atletico Madrid have completed the signing of highly rated young Frenchman Antoine Griezmann, who has joined in a £24million move from Real Sociedad. The 23-year-old impressed at the World Cup and had been a target for Tottenham and Chelsea.
