Transfer News Today: Southampton Star To Agree £24m Chelsea Deal

Holtby to Dortmund is off, Arsenal in for Mandzukic, Shaw to agree Chelsea deal and Newcastle bid for Grenier, plus other rumours...

Deal off

Lewis Holtby’s proposed move to Borussia Dortmund is off after BVB baulked at Tottenham’s £5million asking price. Boss Tim Sherwood revealed this week that Spurs would listen to offers for Holtby and midfielder Etienne Capoue, who has been linked with Napoli.

Forum chatter

Arsenal could make a cheeky move for Bayern Munich striker Mario Mandzukic.

Why it will happen: Mandzukic was left out the squad by Pep Guardiola for Bayern’s 2-0 win at Borussia Moenchengladbach on Friday after “training poorly”. The Croat is unhappy that Robert Lewandowski is joining and would relish the chance to join Arsenal.

Why it won’t happen: Do the Gunners have their fingers in too many pies? With Julian Draxler and Diego Costa strongly linked, have Arsenal got enough time to sign Mandzukic, a player who is still needed by Bayern, before Friday's deadline?

Transfer speculation

Southampton are set to accept an offer in the region of £24million from Chelsea for left-back Luke Shaw, who would be loaned back to the Saints until the end of the season.

Why it will happen: Shaw is a boyhood Chelsea fan and is determined to join the Blues, who see him as a natural replacement for Ashley Cole.

Why it won’t happen: Manchester United have already bid £22million for Shaw. Chelsea won’t get him without a fight.

Bid tabled

Newcastle have made a “sizeable bid” for Lyon midfielder Clement Grenier as they seek to replace Yohan Cabaye before Friday’s transfer deadline.

Why it will happen: The Cabaye money will be burning a hole in Newcastle’s pockets as they run out of time to replace the influential midfielder. There is a strong French contingent at Newcastle so Grenier would settle quickly.

Why it won’t happen: Lyon, who sit fifth in Ligue 1, offer Grenier a greater chance of Champions League football.
