Men’s Boxing at 2:45pm
Tom Stalker (GBR) 2.20 v Denys Berinchyk (UKR) 1.60
Two of the Light Welterweight category’s global amateur stars meet today as the Commenwealth Champion, Tom Stalker, meets World Championship silver medallist Denys Berinchyk of the Ukraine. Stalker, from Liverpool, narrowly missed out on the Team GB squad for Beijing four years ago, but has improved to such an extent that he captains the boxing team at London 2012. These two met in the World Champs late last year in Baku, Azerbaijan, where Stalker was overpowered by the burly Ukranian in a one-sided semi-final, before claiming bronze in a third placed play-off. This will be another tough test for the scouser, and the odds reflect as much, but with home advantage on his side I’m tipping Stalker to catch his prey this afternoon. Back him at an appetising 2.20.
Men’s Handball at 7:30pm
Denmark 1.92 The Draw 8.25 Spain 2.30
Spain have significant pedigree here having won bronze at last year’s World Championships. They’ve also won five of their last six matches and opened up Group B with a convincing 26-21 victory over Serbia three days ago. However, the Danes are a superpower in global handball, and took silver at the aforementioned world champs last January, beating Spain 28-24 in the semi-final. Denmark are also riding high after securing victory at the European Championships earlier this year. They’ll have too much for Spain again here, so back them to bring home the bacon at 1.92.
Men’s Basketball at 8:00pm
France 2.65 v Argentina 1.48
All in all, this is a fairly evenly-matched encounter, with two of basketball’s more established nations locking horns at the O2 Arena. Argentina, ranked third in the world, have won just one of their last four internationals, while this talented young French side will have taken heart from a spirited display in a respectable defeat to USA in the Group A opener the other day. That result left France bottom of Group A, but I can’t see that being the case after this latest match up. Ranked 12th in the world going into the Games, France are better than that rating suggests and are fast-emerging as a force. Back them at 2.65 including overtime for a great value bet today.
