Robby Ginepri made it a winning day for this column at the US Men’s Clay Court Championships in Houston on Tuesday.
Both of the bets that I was considering yesterday proved to be winners, but Ginepri was far the more comfortable, impressing in a routine 6-2, 6-2 mauling of 2012 semi-finalist Michael Russell.
It was good to see Robby back to near his best and he’ll be a threat in this event if he carries on in that form. Ricardas Berankis was also a winner in a real grind against Jesse Levine and Ginepri backers were collecting early on in the opening match of the day.
My focus today switches to Casablanca, as the Grand Prix Hassan II offers some competitive looking matches in today’s remaining first round clashes.
The opening match of the day on Court Central at 12pm UK time sees the number seven seed Robin Haase take on Roberto Bautista-Agut and my money will be on the Spaniard here.
The pair are meeting for the first time in their careers and both are playing their first matches of the year on clay, but Haase has come straight from Davis Cup where he played on quickish indoor hard in Romania and the Spaniard should prove too solid on this surface.
Perhaps unusually for a Spanish player, my pick tends to play more on hard courts, where he’s enjoyed great success this year before picking up a stomach muscle injury and having to retire when leading against Grega Zemlja in Miami.
After three weeks off that should be fine and I like Roberto’s chances in this event in a bottom half of the draw that looks wide open with two time defending champion Pablo Andujar already out.
Haase is a tough player to predict, as he can go on streaky runs but he’s won just three matches on tour this year and lost 14 of his last 16 matches against top-100 ranked players.
Bautista-Agut will be priced up at around 1.67 today and he should be rewarding backers at that price.
Best Bet: Back Bautista-Agut to beat Haase at 1.67
