The first round matches at the Moselle Open continue on Tuesday in Metz, with seven matches scheduled for today.
It was an unfortunate start to the week in France for my wagers yesterday when Ivo Karlovic faltered from a set up against Sam Querrey on a non-televised court.
Today’s card features a few players, who’ve been on Davis Cup duty and I avoid backing these players where possible - they include Florian Mayer, Lukas Lacko, Federico Delbonis and Jesse Huta Galung.
I’m quite tempted by Tobias Kamke, who won a Challenger indoors last week in Petange, Luxembourg, against veteran Marc Gicquel, but the old warhorse loves these conditions, so instead I’ll side with the runner-up in that Challenger event.
Igor Sijsling vs Paul-Henri Mathieu
The Frenchman has had a rough season with ongoing off-court issues to deal with, but I expect him to perform better at home. He showed some spark last week in Petange, where he made the final and the week before in St Remy where he was a semi finalist. OK, its Challenger level, but it’s significantly better form than Sijsling has shown of late.
The Dutchman was left out of the Netherlands’ Davis Cup clash with Austria, with the captain Jan Siemerink hinting that Sijsling wasn’t confident that he could add anything to the team. Considering the team contains the likes of Thiemo De Bakker and Huta Galung, Sijsling must be suffering from a real lack of confidence and it’s not hard to see why.
Igor has now lost his last six matches on the tour and suffered a poor US Open defeat to Challenger level Peter Gojowczyk in New York to add to losses against the likes of Michael Russell, Jack Sock, Ryan Harrison and De Bakker lately. He looks in no sort of form to win here today.
Mathieu has hinted that his body may well be on its last legs, but he’ll be determined to make the most of his wild card here on home soil and he should be able to add to the problems of Sijsling today.
Back Mathieu to beat Sijsling at 1.60
