The main ATP draw of the 2013 Sony Open gets underway today with plenty of matches in the first round on the schedule for Wednesday.
A tricky week at Indian Wells ended on a high on Sunday, as my best bet of Rafa Nadal winning by two sets to one over Juan Martin Del Potro came in at a nice price and this week it will be also be slow playing conditions, but with more humidity and balls not flying through the air as they did in the California desert.
So in short, it's not far off a hard court tournament played on clay, but today I'm going against a favourite who specialises on clay but struggles badly on hard courts.
Our first match of the day at 3pm UK time on Court 1 sees Andrey Kuznetsov take on Victor Hanescu and I'm not too sure that the Russian should be favourite for this one.
The much-heralded 22-year-old achieved a lot on the red dirt at Challenger level last season, but he's found the step up to tour level difficult, with only three wins all season - with one of those wins coming against an injured opponent.
On hard courts his career record is 1-5 and the one was in Melbourne this year when Juan Monaco's hand injury prevented him from putting up much resistance.
At Indian Wells, Kuznetsov was beaten by an out of form Matt Ebden and although Hanescu hasn't been in sparkling form either, he has been playing exclusively on hard courts in 2013 and he's beaten Jerzy Janowicz on indoor hard this season.
The head-to-head also reads in Hanescu's favour, although it's not too relevant today in all honesty - of more interest is the Russian's lack of experience, lack of matches on hard courts and lack of recent wins. That's enough for me to take an interest in Hanescu at around 1.96.
Best Bet: Back Hanescu to beat Kuznetsov at 1.96
