Tuesday was a successful day of ATP betting on Week 33 of the tour at the Western and Southern Open with both of my best bets winning.
Both were pretty comfortable wins, with Vasek Pospisil overcoming the less than fit Gilles Simon by way of a retirement from the Frenchman in set two of their match, while Milos Raonic and Jack Sock played out the predicted tedious three setter to land the overs.
On another busy day in Mason, Ohio there are 12 ATP matches on the schedule for Wednesday and the weather is set for very reasonable conditions of around 20 degree heat and less than 50% humidity, which is most unlike Cincy at this time of year.
Feliciano Lopez had a good win over Kei Nishikori in the first round here, but he looks set to have a real battle on his hands at 6pm UK time tonight against Frenchman Jeremy Chardy.
Lopez hasn’t been past the second round on hard all year and Chardy comes into this match after a solid performance against Adrian Mannarino and with quarter-final points to defend from last year.
Both of the meetings between the two have gone long and the up and down nature of both players suggests to me that a three setter looks likely. They both have big serves and plenty of holds seems the probable outcome here in these quickish Cincy conditions. Over 23.5 games looks good here at 1.87.
James Blake plays his best tennis by far in the United States and he played a blinder in taking down Jerzy Janowicz in the first round here, which I must admit surprised me due to Blake’s poor record against big servers.
Tonight at around 8pm UK time he takes on fellow thirty-something Dmitry Tursunov and this is winnable for Blake in what will be a battle of the big forehands. Whoever finds that clubbing forehand with more regularity will win and if Blake finds anything like his form of the first round he should take this one. The American took three of their four previous meetings many moons ago and appeals today at 1.93.
Others to consider today include Tommy Robredo to cause more problems for Stan Wawrinka as underdog in their 11pm match tonight. The Spaniard has a great record against the Swiss of 5-1 and defeated Stan in the Casablanca final on clay earlier this year. I would expect the quicker conditions here to favour Wawrinka, but I’m not sure I’d be backing him at 1.42 today.
I’m also less than convinced about Pospisil as favourite against David Goffin in their 4pm UK time match today. The Belgian has cruised through against mediocre opposition in qualies and the first round here this week, while Vasek is sure to have a let down soon. It could well be today against the clean-hitting Belgian who has a shot at 2.25.
Back over 23.5 games in Lopez vs Chardy at 1.87
Back Blake to beat Tursunov at 1.93
