It was a winning night for my recommended bet in the women’s singles on Tuesday, as Sloane Stephens caused a shock of seismic proportions in knocking out Serena Williams.
Despite expecting Williams to win the match, my wager on it taking longer than 67.5 minutes was a comfortable winner.
I did say that Stephens would push Williams and how much of a factor Serena’s back and ankle injuries were only she will know, as she was gracious in defeat in her press conference.
Her serve was certainly badly affected and the lack of power she was able to get out of it was a definite factor.
It’s women’s semi finals night in Melbourne tonight and first up Na Li takes on Maria Sharapova for a place in the final at 2.30am UK time on Thursday.
It will be the 13th meeting between the pair, with Sharapova leading
8-4 at the moment and the Russian has won the last three encounters.
Maria has also won all five matches that they have contested on outdoor hard courts and the form that she’s been in so far this tournament I can’t really argue with her price of 1.23 to win tonight.
It’s the lowest price that the Russian has started at against Li since the 2006 US Open and based on everything we’ve seen so far this tournament it’s very hard to back the Chinese player with anything other than the hope that she has a flawless day.
She did beat Sharapova four straight times between 2009 and 2011, but that wasn’t the Sharapova that we’ve seen this fortnight here in Melbourne.
For me not a lot has changed in Li’s game since the two meetings on hard courts in 2012, in which she won just seven games in total and my money will be on Sharapova winning this with a handicap of -4.5 games at 1.70.
Best Bet: Back Sharapova minus 4.5 games to beat Na Li at 1.70.
