Monday was quite a start to the women’s draw of the US Open, with a number of eye-opening results on day one.
I managed to escape some of the carnage thanks to an odds-against success by Paula Ormaechea late on after I was made to look rather silly by Lauren Davis, who suffered the dreaded double bagel and Lourdes Dominguez Lino fared little better.
Things were looking good for the Spaniard before she served for the first set over Laura Robson and proceeded to not only get broken, but she didn’t win another game in the entire match. There are another 32 matches in the women’s draw to choose from today and it’s no easy task narrowing it down to a few.
Karin Knapp vs Grace Min
The American 19-year-old looks to me to have a decent chance here in the main draw of a Grand Slam for only the second time and the first time here in New York. She came through qualifying impressively, beating Andrea Hlavackova in straight sets in her most recent match and there’s no reason why she can’t upset the odds here against the limited Knapp.
One has to go all the way back to 2007 to find Knapp’s only ever main draw win here at the US Open, which was a victory over Yung-Jan Chan. I have this as about even, so the 2.22 about Min looks worth risking here.
Nadezda Petrova vs Julia Glushko
It has to be worth siding with Glushko here with a 3.5 game start on the handicap against a player who hasn’t played for nine weeks and hasn’t actually won a match on tour since Madrid 16 weeks ago.
Petrova has been suffering with a hip problem for a while and it won’t be easy to come back and comfortably defeat a player who is match sharp, as Glushko is.
The Israeli qualified pretty comfortably and has had a solid hard court swing, with some decent wins and good performances. She took a set from Sam Stosur in Toronto after beating Christina McHale and, although she isn’t a world beater by any means, she should have enough to at least stay close to a rusty Petrova.
Others to consider are Su-Wei Hsieh at 3.60 against Klara Zakopalova, who has never won a match in the main draw here and Lesia Tsurenko, who takes on the injured and out of form Lucie Safarova and is available at around 2.65.
Back Min to beat Knapp at 2.22
Back Glushko +3.5 games to beat Petrova at 1.63
