Wednesday on Week 21 of the 2013 WTA Tour yielded one winner from my two wagers in Strasbourg and Brussels.
It was an early start in Brussels for Kaia Kanepi and Domi Cibulkova, and it was Kanepi who got the better of that clash - but I still think that 1.53 was a little short on the Estonian.
And Strasbourg opened in fine style when my best bet for Wednesday, Eugenie Bouchard, won comfortably in straight sets over Camila Giorgi.
Unfortunately, Sofia Arvidsson had a bit of a nightmare against Shuai Peng and went down in straight sets after failing to get a grip on either her serve or groundstrokes.
It was a difficult day in Brussels for those that had to play two matches, and the likes of Peng, Jie Zheng, Romina Oprandi, and Kanepi will need to recover fast for today’s quarter final matches.
The fatigue factor has been calculated into today’s Brussels odds and it’s made it a bit of a lottery for me. So I prefer the Strasbourg quarter finals, where I’m sticking with Bouchard in the opening match of the day against limited Georgian Anna Tatishvili.
Bouchard has been in excellent form of late and I rate her a strong favourite to see off Tatishvili, who hadn’t won a single match in the main draw of any WTA Tour event this year before coming to Strasbourg.
At one stage a couple of months ago she went 5-37 from 42 individual games played, and endured a double bagel thrashing from Sabine Lisicki in the middle of that run.
Bouchard is likely to get this done with a bit to spare and minus 3.5 games on the handicap at 1.75 looks good to me in that one.
I also think Lucie Hradecka will continue her good form this week by beating Johanna Larsson, but she’s a touch short in the betting at 1.55 for my liking. As is Alize Cornet, who is too emotionally unstable for me to back her at 1.60 against an opponent like Chanelle Scheepers, who can get hot, as she proved by hammering Cornet on hard in Hobart this year.
It’s been good to see Flavia Pennetta back to form this week, but it’s a little early to be putting her in at a price like 1.20 against many players on the tour and Misaki Doi should be slightly insulted by her 4.35 quote today.
Best Bet: Back Bouchard –3.5 games to beat Tatishvili at 1.75
