It was a very profitable opening week’s betting on the WTA Tour last week and it’s with a boosted balance that we concentrate on Sydney and Hobart in week two. Last night’s bet on Kirsten Flipkens has been delayed until tonight due to an error in scheduling, but with that result still to come we still weren’t far off doubling our money on the WTA bets last week.
Tonight’s wager that stands out for me is to back Julia Goerges to defeat the on the slide Sveta Kuznetsova at what I think is a big 1.88. I’d have had Goerges closer to 1.50 for this, as Kuznetsova has been in no sort of form for quite some time now.
The Russian did suffer from an ankle injury in the latter part of 2012, but even before that she only once made it past the third of any tournament after the season opener 12 months ago in Auckland. Her comeback wasn’t the best, with a poor loss to the limited Kiki Bertens in the first round as a 1.47 favourite or thereabouts.
It’s been a long time since Sveta defeated a top-20 or so ranked opponent on a hard court and one has to go all the way back to Doha almost a year ago to find one, which was a win over Maria Kirilenko. The fact that Goerges had a poor start to the season herself when losing as a 1.31 favourite against Johanna Larsson has made tonight’s odds closer than they perhaps otherwise have been.
Kuznetsova does have a 2-1 lead in previous matches between the pair, but the Russian’s two wins were four and six years ago and Goerges won their most recent meeting on hard in Dubai.
The German unquestionably has the better recent form and she ended last season in decent shape by reaching the final in Linz. In a match that will contain a lot of firmly struck winners I have to give the edge to Goerges.
Back Goerges to beat Kuznetsova at 1.88
