It was one winner from my two bets on the WTA Tour on a night of tense drama in Sydney and Auckland. Julia Goerges started well, winning the opening set over Sveta Kuznetsova, before she faded to lose in a decider. There was no chance of Kirsten Flipkens fading, though: she came back from a 2-5 final set deficit against Fran Schiavone to make my second bet of the night a winner in a final set tie break.
Tonight’s WTA action looks very competitive in both Sydney and Hobart. I think it’s certainly worth taking a chance on an improving young player in Madison Keys, who faces Jie Zheng. The 17-year-old American has been in superb form lately and landed an easy winner for us a few days ago with a thumping win over Johanna Larsson.
This match-up is one that the more defensive Zheng won easily a year ago at the Australian Open, but Keys has improved enormously since then and dispatched world number 17 Lucie Safarova with ease last night. Keys’ confidence will be sky high and although Zheng enjoyed a fine win herself last night, her opponent, Sam Stosur, was not 100% and has big problems playing in her own country.
That was also a very long match and the diminutive Zheng may well feel the affects as she faces the aggressive teenager. Prior to the Stosur match, Zheng had lost five matches in a row and seven of her last eight, so it’s a little premature to have her as a 1.55 favourite in what could be a very tough match.
Keys is available at around 2.38 and I think it’s worth taking a chance on her to continue her great form here in Sydney at that price.
Back Keys to beat Zheng at 2.38
