Lesia Tsurenko did just about enough for another winning WTA wager on Sunday at the 2013 BNP Paribas Open. Petra Kvitova won the match 6-2, 7-6, but Tsurenko’s handicap of +5.5 games made our bet a narrow winner in what is turning out to be a good tournament so far in the women’s draw.
My other fancies of yesterday yielded an odds-against win for Klara Zakopalova, while Mallory Burdette gave Maria Kirilenko a run for her money before losing in the decider.
Today’s action at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden features Victoria Azarenka, Caroline Wozniacki and Sam Stosur, but the two matches that interest me from a betting angle are Ana Ivanovic v Mona Barthel and Garbine Muguruza v Magdalena Rybarikova.
The latter match offers a good chance to back the improving young Spaniard Muguruza at around 2.08 against lanky Slovak Rybarikova in what will be their third career meeting. Both of those previous meetings have taken place this season, with their first encounter ending in a 14-12 final set win for Muguruza at the Australian Open and their match on indoor hard in Paris going the way of Rybarikova.
Muguruza is one to keep an eye on and will enjoy these conditions at Indian Wells perhaps more than her opponent, who has never performed well here in the past. Both players had excellent wins over two seeded lefties in the last round (Ekaterina Makarova and Lucie Safarova) and we could be all set for another long encounter today, with the total games mark being set at 21.5 games.
This match is first on Court 7 at 6pm UK time this evening and I’m siding with the slight underdog in this one at 2.08.
Best bet: Back Muguruza to beat Rybarikova at 2.08
