Women's tennis Betting: Sloane Stephens to brush Aside Sofia Arvidsson

On the WTA side yesterday Heather Watson did the business for us with a win over Sorana Cirstea after the Romanian retired at one set down to the Brit. My other bet was desperately unlucky, as Ula Radwanska wasted match points against Ksenia Pervak before losing in a final set breaker.

There are some attractive-looking WTA match ups tonight in Brisbane, not least the hard-hitting clash between Vika Azarenka and Sabine Lisicki in which the German has a shot on her best form, but I’d want a bigger price than 5.50 based on Aza’s form of 12 months ago when she swept all before her until Miami.

If Lisicki serves at her best she could trouble the world number one, but a wager that I prefer is for Sloane Stephens to continue her good form against indoor specialist Sofia Arvidsson.

The American world number 38 recorded an impressive win over Dominika Cibulkova in the first round here and she looks to be one to keep on the right side of in 2012.

Arvidsson lost only three of 16 matches indoors last season, but despite a good win on paper over Sam Stosur first up here I’m not convinced that the victory over an ailing player will amount to a great deal.

The Aussie’s struggles in her home country are well known and she wasn’t in the best physical condition either after ankle surgery recently, so the Swede’s win in that match wasn’t a huge shock.

Arvidsson only once made it past the second round in all her tournaments on outdoor hard last season and Stephens for my money is the classier operator in these conditions. At around 1.80 Stephens looks worth a bet.

Best Bet:

Back Stephens to beat Arvidsson at 1.80
