Caroline Garcia was unable to build on her good start against Olga Puchkova in Florianopolis on Thursday and let the Russian back in for a come-from-behind victory.
It was a disappointing collapse after taking the first set by the 19-year-old French player, but I really don't rate Puchkova much and I'm going against her again today when she takes on another talented teen in Jana Cepelova.
I said yesterday that Garbine Muguruza has the talent but perhaps not the consistency to beat Venus Williams and she wasn't far off last night, with the Spaniard losing 7-5 in the third and scoring just four points fewer than Williams in total.
Williams survives to take on Magdalena Rybarikova tonight, while the only other remaining seed Kiki Mladenovic faces Melinda Czink and Monica Niculescu takes on Timea Babos in the last of the quarter finals.
I wouldn't back Williams at a price like 1.30 with her health problems these days and similarly Niculescu looks short at 1.33 against Babos, however the in-form Mladenovic should have few problems taking care of Czink.
But Cepelova looks decent at 1.60 coming into this with good form in 2013, losing only to Sveta Kuznetsova, Yanina Wickmayer and Sofia Arvidsson so far this season and landing a good win over top-40 ball basher Bojana Jovanovski in Fed Cup a few weeks ago.
Her defeats to Wickmayer and Kuznetsova were both in tight matches and losing to Arvidsson indoors is no real surprise. Her overall level is better than that of Puchkova who has lost 11 of her last 13 matches to top-50 ranked opponents.
The 19-year-old Slovak is yet to drop a set in Florianopolis so far this week and I would be surprised if she wasn't able to keep her good run going against the limited Puchkova.
Best Bet: Back Cepelova to beat Puchkova at 1.60
