There was more pain on Day Two of the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships as Julia Goerges somehow contrived to lose to Sara Errani.
The German, as expected, had the match on her racquet in conditions that suit her powerful game, but she was unable to stem the tide of unforced errors that leaked from her game all too regularly.
I said yesterday that she’s a bit hit and miss and the extremely windy conditions did not help, but Goerges should have put Errani to the sword – she did at times, but some ghastly errors at crucial moments saw her lose a tight three-setter.
The fact that Errani didn’t hit one single winner for the first two sets says it all and it was almost a repeat of the Laura Robson match on day one.
Today’s schedule features what should be an entertaining match-up between Petra Kvitova and Ana Ivanovic, who are meeting for the sixth time on tour, with Ivanovic holding a 4-1 head-to-head lead at the moment.
But surely Kvitova, whose confidence looks to have returned in the last few matches, will have too much for Ivanovic in these quick conditions in Dubai.
Ivanovic looked to have some sort of shoulder injury in her struggle over Nastia Pavlyuchenkova in round one and if it’s windy again her awful ball toss will be quite a sight to behold.
Kvitova demolished Dani Hantuchova in round one and if she continues in the same form she’ll surely defeat Ivanovic today at around 1.44.
For a cross tournament double I’ll take Sofia Arvidsson to beat Marina Erakovic in a repeat of last year’s final in Memphis.
Indoor specialist Arvidsson has been below par this year, but a return to her title winning city of 12 months ago seems to have boosted the Swede and she’ll be confident of defeating Erakovic in the same conditions today.
Arvidsson was struggling with a virus earlier on this season, but having recovered from that she looks decent at 1.52 to progress further in Memphis.
Best Bet: Back Kvitova and Arvidsson in a double at 2.19
