The opening day of the 2013 BNP Paribas Open yielded one winner from my two WTA bets on Wednesday at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.
Timea Babos collapsed spectacularly after winning the opening set against Johanna Larsson, but Lesia Tsurenko had a comfortable time of it against Ayumi Morita, winning 6-1, 6-2 in under an hour.
Thursday in California sees Brits Laura Robson and Heather Watson make their debuts in this year's tournament and Watson will surely be too strong for the injured Irina-Camelia Begu.
The Brit and the Romanian meet at 7pm UK time tonight on Stadium Court 3 and although Heather has had problems with her right elbow this year, she's fitter than today's opponent, who has retired from two of her last three matches with a much more worrying shoulder problem.
This pair are meeting for the first time and indeed this will be Heather's first match in the main draw at Indian Wells, but I would expect her to be too strong for an opponent who has won just two matches in 2013 and is making the switch from playing on clay last week.
Watson can be the first leg of a double, the second leg of which involves Jamie Hampton to defeat last week's Kuala Lumpur finalist Bethanie Mattek-Sands.
Hampton is on the rise and she played very well here at Indian Wells a year ago, reaching the fourth round before having to retire at one set all against Aga Radwanska. After a week off, she will be much the fresher of the two Americans.
Bethanie's tough week in Asia combined with travelling and Hampton's superior game leads me to believe that Jamie will win this clash with a bit to spare. The double with Watson pays around 2.03
Best Bet: Back Watson and Hampton in a double at 2.03
