Victoria Azarenka’s 6-2, 6-2 win over Sara Errani in Doha on Friday made it four winners from five bets on week seven of the 2013 WTA Tour.
As expected, Vika was able to break the weak serve of the Italian almost at will and the Italian was able to hold her own serve on just two occasions in the match, making our under 17.5 games bet a successful one.
Elsewhere there was a hugely improved performance from Petra Kvitova, who was close to causing an upset against Serena Williams, but the American held on to win in three.
So it’s semi finals day in Doha and Williams faces Maria Sharapova, while Azarenka takes on Aga Radwanska and both favourites have dominant records over their opponents today.
Azarenka is 12-3 over Radwanska, winning the last six straight and four of those in straight sets, while Williams has a 10-2 career advantage over Sharapova, winning the last nine in a row against the Russian.
It’s tricky to find a great deal of value in these two matches unless you fancy either underdog. Personally I’d be surprised if we didn’t see a Williams/Azarenka final tomorrow, but at 1.20 and 1.34 respectively you won’t get rich on the match odds.
For me the best bet today is for Williams to beat Sharapova with a 3.5 game handicap at around 1.57.
Sharapova can’t cope with this match-up and unless she’s dishing out the treatment to her opponents she struggles, as has been seen against Azarenka lately and also when Na Li took it to her in Melbourne.
Williams was quite poor by her standards at times against Kvitova yesterday, but she showed admirable stomach for the fight and she’ll surely play better today against an opponent she knows she can outhit.
In the last four meetings between the pair Williams has more than covered a 3.5 games handicap and you have to go back to Wimbledon 2010 for the last time that Sharapova pushed her close.
Best Bet: Back Williams -3.5 games to beat Sharapova at 1.57
