The tennis betting week got off to the perfect start in Rome on Monday when Laura Robson cruised past an out of sorts Venus Williams in the opening round of the Internazionali BNL d’Italia.
Robson was rarely in any danger against the American. I said yesterday that Venus had been suffering with a back problem and she certainly didn’t look to be moving too well on the clay on Monday.
It was a good winner for this column, but the reward for Laura is to play the second of the Williams sisters Serena in the next round, which will still be excellent experience for Robson even if, as expected, she loses to the world number one.
Tuesday’s schedule features an interesting clash between Roberta Vinci and Elena Vesnina, in which I have to side with the Russian to at least take a set against the Italian.
Vinci has an awful record at the Foro Italico, having lost in the first round four times (including the last two in a row) and the second round four times in her eight main draw appearances.
On top of that, Vesnina has won four of their five meetings and Vinci is currently struggling with a shoulder problem that has seen her lose her last two matches on the tour to Varvara Lepchenko and Yaraslava Shvedova.
Vesnina has had injury issues too, which is a bit of a worry, but after retiring from her singles match in Madrid against Marion Bartoli she continued in the doubles. This suggests that there can’t have been anything too badly wrong and she takes her place in the line-up at Rome today presumably in decent shape.
The match is scheduled for 11am UK time on Tuesday morning and the 1.75 about Vesnina winning with a 1.5 set start looks a good bet to start the day’s tennis in Rome.
Best Bet: Back Vesnina +1.5 sets to beat Vinci at 1.75
