Sunday is finals day in Cincinnati at the 2014 Western & Southern Open with the ladies singles title being fought over by Serena Williams and Ana Ivanovic.
Williams’s slow start to her semi-final against Caroline Wozniacki helped my best bet of over 20.5 games over the line on Saturday, while my other suggestions were also winners for those that went with the handicap and first set handicap on the Dane.
And to cap a good day of WTA betting, those on my suggested wager in the Ivanovic semi-final against Maria Sharapova would also have enjoyed a stress-free winner on set one to the Serb.
We start at 19:00 UK time on Sunday and it’s set to be hot and humid in Mason, Ohio again today, with a chance of the odd thunderstorm.
Serena Williams vs Ana Ivanovic
The three meetings between this superstar pair in 2014 have all been much tighter affairs than previously was the case in this rivalry.
Prior to this season Ivanovic hadn’t been close to taking a set from Williams in four tries, but this year all three of their clashes have gone the distance, with Ana winning in Melbourne and Serena on the clay of Rome and in Stanford a few weeks ago.
Consequently, Williams is at her biggest price against Ivanovic since they met in Dubai in 2009 and in the circumstances I think Ana is maybe a little short today.
The circumstances I mean are that she played the night match last night and had the doctor on court for some medical issue that could have been anything from sickness to nerves to a racing heartbeat depending on which source you believe.
In fairness, Williams also had the doctor on court yesterday, but she seemed fine and the late finish for Ivanovic last night in a match that lasted not far off three hours will surely hamper her today.
Even the great Roger Federer showed last week in Toronto how tough it is to play the night match and come back the next day in the early afternoon and play a final.
A mighty battle with Sharapova in which Ivanovic had to save match points will have taken a lot out of her and in a match where I would have given Ana half a chance under different circumstances I’m expecting her to struggle a little today.
Williams was slow to start again yesterday in her semi with Wozniacki, but she’s never won this tournament and I expect her to step up and take this away from Ivanovic.
The 2-0 on Williams at around the 1.72 mark appeals in this one and it will take a supreme effort from Ivanovic to come back from that Sharapova battle to make this close in a quick turnaround.
Back Williams to beat Ivanovic 2-0 at 1.72
