The WTA Tour heads to Colombia and Poland in week 15, as the clay court swing closes in.
And we go there in decent shape after Andrea Petkovic landed a nice odds-against win on the handicap for this column on Sunday, with her 7-5, 6-2 victory in Charleston more than covering her 4.5 game deficit in that match.
It was a popular win around the tennis circuit, with Petko’s struggles over the last couple of years through injury being well documented and the likeable 26-year-old was a worthy champion on the green clay.
This week’s live tennis comes from Poland, with Eurosport covering the BNP Paribas Katowice Open, which is an International level event that is being held for the second time – but with a fairly major difference for 2014.
Instead of last year’s indoor clay, the tournament has opted for a PlayFlex by Play It indoor hard surface, so there’s no previous information to rely upon in terms of court speed and previous results here are of little relevance now.
There are just the five first round matches on the card for Monday, with qualifiers still in-play and with little knowledge of the conditions to go on it may pay to be a little circumspect today.
Alison Van Uytvanck 3.60 vs Carla Suarez-Navarro 1.27 - BET and STREAM live on Unibet TV from 17.05
If the surface here has any pace in it this could well be a tricky opener for Suarez Navarro, who faces an opponent with plenty of power, a good serve and who should be suited by indoor conditions in Van Uytvanck.
Consistency has been the main problem for the Belgian, but when she does find her range she can be devastating and there may well be spells in this match when she outhits the Spaniard, who has only once been past the last eight stage indoors.
Carla was rather disappointing at Indian Wells and Miami where she won just three matches in total and I always feel that conditions in those two tournaments should suit her well on slow, hard courts with wind generally present, but she confounds that viewpoint year on year.
Van Uytvanck showed some very good form on slow outdoor hard in Florianopolis a few weeks ago when she made the last eight as a qualifier and although the level of competition was below this week’s standard the Belgian has won 18 of her last 23 matches indoors since last autumn.
She could catch CSN cold here and the 2.90 about Van Uytvanck winning set one looks a tempting wager to start the week in Katowice with.
