The opening round completes and the second round begins at the Family Circle Cup in Charleston on Tuesday.
Monday’s bet has to go down as very unfortunate, as Stefanie Voegele produced yet another choke in a series that has blighted her career when the Swiss blew a 5-2 deciding set lead and a match point against Ajla Tomljanovic.
And it looks a particularly testing card today, with nine first round matches and five second round encounters scheduled for Tuesday, but there are a couple of wagers that I like the look of.
Shuai Zhang 1.53, Su-Wei Hsieh 2.40
This fifth career meeting between these two Asian stars looks set to be another quick one, with the unders looking rather tempting here.
Zhang has been struggling with an arm injury of late and if it wasn’t for that impediment I’d be siding with the Chinese world number 45 against Hsieh, who has had a poor year and has never played this tournament before.
Neither player would consider clay their best surface, but this green clay is different and plays closer to a hard court than the European red clay, which may make things easier for these two.
Hsieh had the best of the series in the past, but Hsieh was ranked 23 in the world the last time she defeated Zhang and she’s now outside the top-120, with just one win in the main draw at tour level this season.
That win was, somewhat bizarrely, over Flavia Pennetta, who’s one of the most in-form players this season, but otherwise Hsieh has been poor and with neither player liking clay I can see this being a quick one, as both of their tour level meetings were in the past.
The under 20.5 games at 1.90 looks the call in this 15.00 UK time encounter.
Elena Vesnina 1.60, Karolina Anna Schmiedlova 2.30
This looks a good opportunity for former finalist Vesnina to get her season going against an opponent who won the Osprey title a few days ago and may well be fatigued from that effort.
Schmiedlova had to play five sets on Sunday due to the rain and her semi-final against Lourdes Dominguez-Lino went all the way to a final set tie breaker before a much more straightforward affair in the final against Marina Erakovic and that combined with the travel may see her below par today.
The Slovakian will at least be attuned to the green clay, but her record against the higher ranked players is still poor, with only one win her career so far against a player ranked inside the top-35, which was against Alizé Cornet back in April last year in Schmiedlova’s first WTA level main draw appearance.
Vesnina has been threatening a good run and she did play well in defeat against Aga Radwanska last week in Miami, where she also had another good run in the doubles with Kate Makarova.
Schmiedlova’s Osprey win seems to have made her rather short today at 2.40 and Vesnina as a consequence is backable at 1.60 today in this 17.00 UK time match.
Both of the Williams sisters are in action today and Venus looks a little short at 1.16 against Barbora Zahlavova Strycova, who is more than capable of troubling the veteran American.
Serena should have few problems against Jana Cepelova, while today’s underdogs don’t hold much appeal, with perhaps Shelby Rogers and Caroline Garcia holding the best chances of causing upsets on Tuesday.
Back under 20.5 games in Zhang/Hsieh at 1.90
Back Vesnina to beat Schmiedlova at 1.60
