Toronto Blue Jays v Texas Rangers
Look for the Texas Rangers to upend the Toronto Blue Jays on the road . I’ve been bullish on the Japanese import Yu Darvish ever since the Rangers committed more than $110 million to get his services in the off-season. His first two starts weren’t perfect, but his last time out Darvish dominated the Yankees, shutting out New York’s vaunted lineup over 8 1/3 innings. Overall, he seems comfortable on the road – in his two games on away from Texas, he’s put up a 1.50 ERA. The Blue Jays’ Kyle Drabek has pitched pretty well this year (he sports a 2.25 ERA), but his control hasn’t been great and the Rangers, with the second-most potent offence in the American League, is the type of team that will make the most of mistakes. Go with Darvish and the Rangers at 1.65 instead of Drabek and the Jays at 2.25.
Chicago Cubs v Philadelphia Phillies
The Chicago Cubs’ Jeff Samardzija is going to have a tough time of things when he pitches at the Philadelphia Phillies. He’s 1-2 with a 9.00 ERA in 10 career innings against Philadelphia; this also happens to be his first start at the unforgiving Citizens Bank Park, where he’s only thrown a meager 3 2/3 innings in his career. (Overall, he’s never been as good away than home: 4.96 ERA on the road versus 3.81 ERA at home.) Of course, the Phillies starter Vance Worley has extensive experience there, owning a 7-3 record and a 2.59 ERA at Citizens Bank. The experience at the stadium – which has yielded the second-most homers in the Majors this season – is a difference maker in this one. Phillies (1.57) should take the game against the Cubs (2.40)
