Braves v Padres
Paul Maholm’s current form should assure the Atlanta Braves a victory over the San Diego Padres on Wednesday. In his past eight starts, Maholm has posted a fantastic 1.20 ERA with hitters mustering a paltry .194 batting average against him. During the past couple of weeks, the Padres have been among the better teams in baseball, but they are not as strong on the road (.417 winning percentage versus .474 at home) and Maholm has just been too good. It also doesn’t help that San Diego starter Edinson Volquez is dismal on the road. Away from Petco Park he has a 5.04 ERA this season (in comparison he owns a 3.24 ERA at home). Pick the Braves at 1.57 not the Padres at 2.40.
Mariners v Rays
Fans of the cellar-dwelling Seattle Mariners will have reason to rejoice when they square off against the playoff-contending Tampa Bay Rays. The reason Seattle will score the upset: M’s starter Felix Hernandez. In his past 11 starts, Hernandez is 6-0 with a 1.73 ERA. He particularly excels at home where he has a 2.26 ERA. Throughout his career, King Felix has always pitched well against the Rays. In ten outings he has a 2.28 ERA. Rays pitcher Jeremy Hellickson has been subpar as of late. In his past two starts he’s allowed 15 hits and seven runs in just 9 innings of work. He’ll need to do much better than that to compete with Hernandez. I’m not seeing it, so take the Mariners at 1.75 instead of the Rays at 2.08.
